THINKING OF TREKKING TO THE FAMOUS EVEREST BASE CAMP THIS SEASON? THEN YOU’RE IN FOR A TREAT AND A BIT OF HASSLE AS WELL.
If you don’t know already, Tribhuvan International Airport of Kathmandu is being renovated, which has actually started from April 1, 2019 and is due to finish on July 30, 2019 according to Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal. So, all the flights to and from Lukla is bound to be affected. Most of the airlines flying their planes to Lukla from Kathmandu have already cancelled. They have proposed an alternative flight to Lukla from Manthali airport in Ramechhap. However, it will require you to take a jeep or a bus to Ramechhap from Kathmandu and come back the same way when you’re returning from Lukla.
Where is Manthali Airport?
Manthali airport is located in Manthali, the headquarter of Ramechhap district and is about 120 km east of Kathmandu. It takes about 4-5 hours or more by road to reach Manthali from Kathmandu depending on the traffic condition. Manthali is a small town and is the midway place when you’re going to Jiri. Not many visitors come to Manthali usually. So, there are limited accommodation options and the level of service is also not that high.
What has Freedom Adventures got to offer?
The whole Manthali area has almost 120 rooms but not enough for a huge number of trekkers going to Everest Base Camp. So, Freedom Adventures have set up a tented camp in one of the coolest places in the hot weather of Manthali. The tented camp is a full fledged one with the tents having comfortable mattresses, tented shower and toilet, dining tents and a mini-bar as well. The tented camp can house 40 people at once. The service provided is up to the standard and the food is hygienic and equally delicious. All these at an affordable price range.
What are your options to travel to Manthali?
- Take a bus or a jeep from the busy place of Koteshwor to Kathmandu. The vehicles only leave till 3pm in the afternoon.
- Rent a private vehicle to travel in comfort.
There are also other ways to get to Lukla. The first one being driving to Jiri, and start walking from there. It will take you about 5 days to reach Lukla and this option is only for those who have plenty of time in their hands. The other one is taking a helicopter directly from Kathmandu, but in these times of inadequate flights it’s hard for you to book one. But don’t worry, you can get flights from Manthali. Even if your flights are cancelled or delayed then Freedom Adventures has got you covered. You can lay back and enjoy a chilled beer at the tented camp to beat the scorching heat. We hope to see you in the camp and have a beer together!
