Unlock the Mysteries of Mustang: Where Ancient Walls Whisper Tales of Culture, Adventure, and Himalayan Grandeur.

Overview

Many locations in Nepal are still off-limits to foreign hikers. Nonetheless, access to a few of these isolated regions, including Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Manaslu, and Makalu, has been made possible in recent years. All of these locations are trekked by Freedom Adventure, but Mustang is our top pick based on personal experience. While there isn't five-star luxury in this area, there is a distinctive atmosphere, a vibrant culture, friendly locals, and the fascinating historic wall city of Lo-Manthang. The Tibetan High Plateau is a unique ecosystem since it is a high-altitude desert under the Himalayan rain shadow. The majority of people living there are Buddhists from Tibet. The city can only be entered once through a sizable wooden entrances, and the today king Jigme Palber Bista and his family still reside there.

Best Time to go

Spring, spanning from March to May, stands out as an excellent time for the Upper Mustang Trek, offering pleasant weather and a vibrant landscape adorned with colorful flowers. The daytime temperatures are mild, ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), providing a comfortable trekking environment. However, it's crucial to acknowledge potential challenges during this season. Lower elevations might experience dustiness, and higher regions could retain lingering snow. The transitional conditions necessitate trekkers to be prepared for varying terrains and potential flight disruptions. Despite these considerations, the cultural richness of the region remains accessible, providing a unique perspective on the landscapes. Thorough preparation, including suitable gear for diverse conditions, is recommended for a rewarding exploration of Mustang during this period.

Freedom Adventures Pokhara Nepal

Spent 19 days on the Annapurna Circuit, a bespoke trek with my adult daughter. It was truly a trip of a lifetime. Whilst Freedom Adventures made all the arrangements it was our guide & Sherpa that made the trip an excellent one. Raj Rai our guide worked so hard to ensure we crossed the pass safely with no symptoms of altitude sickness. He also ensured we experienced the Nepali & Tibetan culture. When there was a problem he tackled it & came up with a solution. Akeem our Sherpa was such a character who not only carried our pack but ensured we had tea regularly, stopped for lunch and had the best room as instructed by Raj. They made us feel safe & cared for. It took a while to adjust to not having them around after the trek.

Tailor-made trail running trip in Mustang

We had a wonderful 9-day journey in Nepal. My husband and I are trail runners and we wanted to visit Mustang on a tight schedule. We started with a 2-day acclimatization stay in Pokhara. Yam was our friendly guide in Pokhara and Biru, a trail runner athlete, accompanied us on all of our runs. Then we flew to Jomson where we met Tika, who would be our guide in Mustang. We had a plan but we were happy that Freedom Adventure was very resourceful when it came to handling situations such as flight delays (out of the 4 flights we took, 3 were either delayed or canceled due to weather conditions) and unexpected snow in May in Upper Mustang. The man behind the scenes, Ajay, was the coordinator of our trip and we were lucky to have him because our plan had changed so many times! Tika and Yam were very helpful and welcomed us warmly. We felt confident and well taken cared of at all times, even when we lost the trail that was covered with snow. Biru, our trail runner was very patient with us. Not only is he an exceptional runner, but he knew how to pace us, given the altitude. This was such an intense and beautiful experience. The team was extraordinary!
